The provision for Constitutional amending was to alter the limits of government, not the basics of law. Our government is clearly not obeying its limits, and so changing those limits will not fix anything. The law must stand over all.
The word Republic comes from the Latin “res publicus”, which literally means “The people’s thing”, which is a reference to law.
Democracy comes from the Greek “dēmokratia”, which means “popular government” or popular rule.
As James Madison said in Federalist Paper #10: “Hence it is that such democracies have ever been … as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths.”
This sounds so distant from what we hear today, that we ARE a democracy and that it is so important to preserve it.
We have been misinformed about both our history and the nature of law.
Law is not meant to be constantly changing or complex. Simple rules of sane human relationships are all that are needed. It was not meant to be an intermediate form of a dictatorship’s wishes, nor was it meant to contradict itself, like saying under what circumstances murder by abortion is allowed or that the right of vehicular travel is inherently illegal and must therefore be licensed. It’s for our “safety”, don’t you know.
The core of true law dictates principles of love for each other:
Do not cheat.
Do not steal.
Do not lie.
Do not kill.
These concepts are never outdated or meant to change.
Like a Pharisee, our governments paint a nice look on the outside while inside lives corruption, bribery, coveting, and murder.
Simple and pure democracy, whether representative or direct, has no concept of any limit to majority rule. Law is whatever the people want or will tolerate. And the line moves steadily in the direction of dictatorship (left or right) because there is no solid, unmoving law to stop it.
Losing these key distinctions destroys a free people.
